NEW DELHI - A senior journalist from Kashmir has said that the power of non- violence and modern technologies such as the Internet can be used efficiently to change systems.

Ifthikhar Gilani said that the correct use of these powers (non- violence and Internet) was most visible during the period 2008 to 2010, when unrest in Kashmir was at its peak.

He suggested that the Arab world could learn and emulate from this.

Siddharth Varadarajan, Strategic Affairs Editor of The Hindu, India’s leading national daily said that media in the modern world has failed to provide a true picture of an issue or an event.

“if you read news papers or look at television, you get a fairly one sided coverage, a one sided picture. I don’t think the national media has covered the plight and suffering of people in Kashmir to the full extent that the ought to have. But the same is true of the plight and suffering of the people all over the country. You are dealing with a media industry and a media structure that does not actually fully live up to its obligation of holding a mirror to society,” he said.

He advised the students not to be biased and suppress the real issue when reporting.

The speakers encouraged budding journalists from the Kashmir Valley to learn as it would clear their prejudices.

Journalism students from Kashmir were in Delhi, for discussions and counseling sessions related to various aspects of the profession with senior journalists on Tuesday. (ANI)
