PML-N all set to dump PPP in Punjab over 10-point reforms agenda

LAHORE - The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) is reportedly set to dump its coalition partner in Punjab, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), on the ground that the federal government had failed to implement the 10-point agenda in the province.
The PML-N had set the 10-point agenda for the federal government to improve its working and style of governance.
Sources claimed that a plan has been tailored by the PML-N in such a fashion that it will not affect the working relationship of the party with the federal government.
They also said that the PML-N has secured its parliamentary strength to a point where it can prolong its tenure in the province without the support of the PPP or any other group.
According to the Daily Times, the PML-N party leadership has given a go ahead signal to the parliamentary leadership to seek help from other parliamentary groups to the extent of pulling the PPP government down within the stipulated time, most likely in June.
Earlier, PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif Nawaz had asked the PPP-led federal government to give a clear-cut reply on its list of demands, which included the withdrawal of the increase in POL prices, introducing a mechanism to control electricity and gas prices and load-shedding, effective measures to control corruption as well as ousting corrupt ministers and officers from government departments.
The PML-N had also demanded in its charter of demands that the PPP government implement the Supreme Court decisions- including its verdict against the NRO, ensure a 30 percent reduction in the government’s development expenses, reconstitute the Election Commission of Pakistan, recover loans that were written off on political basis, ensure security of the country and strengthen the standing committees of both houses of parliament.
He also emphasized that if the government failed to translate the proposed agenda into reality by February 20, the PML-N would take other opposition parties on board on the same agenda.
“If other opposition parties do not agree or commit with us on our agenda, a stronger government would be needed through fresh mandate to implement it,” Nawaz had said.
“If the prime minister accepts our demands, the government will have to implement it within 45 days and the PML-N would support him in its execution,” he had added. (ANI)
