JAMMU - Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has denied that hardline separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani has been arrested or arrest warrants have been issued against him.
Dispelling the impression spread through a section of the media that Geelani was arrested in Delhi on Sunday, the chief minister tweeted: There is no arrest warrant. He has only been asked to record his statement in connection with his alleged hawala money.
He was replying to one of his followers who apprehended that Kashmir would erupt as arrest warrants have been issued against Geelani.
Omar Abdullah has sought to clarify the status of Geelani vis–vis Delhi Police asking him not to leave the union capital.
The Delhi Police had asked Geelani, who is in Delhi, not to leave. The police want to question him about hawala money with which his four aides were caught about two weeks ago.
Geelani’s supporters have given a call for a shutdown on Tuesday in protest against the Delhi Police action against him.
