Traditional artwork exhibition held in Kolkata

KOLKATA - Various artworks by Kantha or embroidery artisans were put on display in an exhibition held in Kolkata.

The artworks displayed in the exhibition were the efforts of poor women who have now become economically self-reliant through the medium of this traditional form of embroidery.

Shamlu Dudeja, the chairperson of an NGO in Kolkata, who has been running the project for the last 25 years, said that it was one of the means through which women can liberate themselves from the constant fiscal dependence on their husbands.

“One of the primary things was that these women had no money of their own. Now whatever amount they earn is their own. So, it gives them a sense of pride and self-worth, and they feel they can achieve something. On top of that they are making such beautiful Kanthas,” Dudeja said.

Piyali Bera, a Kantha artisan, feels that stitch work has helped her a lot in gaining self-esteem and respect.

She has also gained greater monetary independence by earning Rs.2500 to Rs.3000 per month.

“I could not study due to bad economic conditions of my parents. Then a relative, who was into this profession, told me of this work of art about stitching or Kantha. So, after starting I realized that I could carry on my studies and earn my own money. So, it was important for me. Since then I have been working on this Kantha,” she said. (ANI)
