MOSCOW - Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev has urged Russia to adopt a new approach to ‘terrorism’, insisting that it cannot be defeated with “cannons”.

“Those who think that terrorism can be defeated with cannons and rifles are mistaken. Poverty, humiliation, instability, these are the factors that must be addressed.” Sky News quoted him, as saying.

Referring to last month’s explosion at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport in Moscow, which was one of 29 suicide attacks to take place in Russia in the past year, Gorbachev stressed that Kremlin’s management of the situation needs to change.

At least 31 persons were killed and over hundred others were reported to be injured in the blast that rocked Domodedovo Airport in January this year.

Domodedovo airport is the busiest of Moscow’s three commercial airports.

Acknowledging that things were far from perfect in Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s regime, Gorbachev further predicted that Putin would not run for a third term as President in 2012 as many believe.

“Most likely he will not run for the presidency. Two terms is enough - well, he has had his two terms. What will they do in the future? Maybe he and President Medvedev will swap places again,” he added. (ANI)
