GUWAHATI/IMPHAL - Amid ongoing peace talks with various northeast insurgent groups, the states of the northeast celebrated this year’s 62nd Republic Day with great enthusiasm this week sending out a clear message to militants that violence is out and development is in.

Residents in Assam defied a boycott call by militants and participated in the celebrations.

The insurgent groups, however, sought to disrupt the festive spirit by triggering a blast on the rail line in Haflong district. tudents took part in cultural performances and appreciated an army march past.

In Manipur though, there was heavy security in place after miscreants triggered a powerful explosion at Khurai Telepati near the Shiva Temple. The Republic Day celebrations went off without a hitch.

Thousands of people from all walks of life came out on the occasion, which clearly indicated their desire for a violence free society.

The non-governmental organisations, cultural troupes, school children and workers from many departments captivated the audience through their cultural programmes.

“I think there will be peace soon in Manipur. It is great to see all the communities performing together. The republic day passes a message of unity and brotherhood,” said Dhiren Singh, a local.

“I am happy to see all the developments works that are taking place in the region under the aegis of government,” added June Rose, another local.

The Republic Day was celebrated in a similar manner in Tripura, Sikkim, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh. (ANI)
