Women in Maoist-affected Bihar village form cooperatives

BARORAH - Women in Barorah village, one of the Maoist-affected areas of Bihar have formed cooperatives to earn their livelihood.
Women of the village formed 156 small groups and collected money with which they opened a bank account and started their business.
“We thought that we are staying in shanty huts why not make a group and make our economic condition stable. We collected 10 or 20 rupees and opened our bank account with Punjab National Bank and we are hopeful that the government would turn up to provide us with monetary aid,” said Devi.
She said that the teamwork among them helped to overcome the fear of Maoists in the area, and added that they make sure to move in groups wherever they go.
“We went to 10 to 15 villages and made our groups. We faced no troubles because whenever we went, it was always in a group of 10 to 15 women. So, it never affected us that it is a Maoist-hit area, or something like that,” she said.
The women earn around 150 to 160 rupees per blanket and are striving to make their roots firmer and spread their wings in the business. (ANI)
