NEW DELHI - The Supreme Court Friday asked the Maharashtra chief secretary to clarify if he declined to provide night shelters to the homeless saying they were “outsiders” in the state.

The apex court bench of Justice Dalveer Bhandatri and Justice Deepak Verma sought the clarification after senior counsel Colin Gonsalves told the court that in the chief secretary has once said that the government cannot help homeless people who did not belong to Maharashtra.

The court said the chief secretary could face contempt if he did make the remarks attributed to him.
