SRINAGAR - The chairman of the moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, has said the United Nations has failed to resolve the Kashmir issue.

At a Hurriyat Conference seminar titled ‘The United Nations and its role on Kashmir’, the Mirwaiz said: “The Kashmir issue had a solid base because of the United Nations resolutions, but it is a failed body now… Either it should be closed, or there should be a parallel body… So we do not have much expectation from the United Nations.”

“It is the responsibility of the United Nations to either say that they are closing their office or disband the United Nations. If the United Nations is not disbanded then they should understand their commitments and responsibilities. They should come forward to the resolve the issue and even if ther are not implemented then the alternative mechanism, which we have stated by the Hurriyat as negotiations on Jammu and Kashmir should be implemented,” he added.

The wishes and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir should be supreme while finding a solution to Kashmir issue, he said.

“If you want to streamline the India-Pakistan dialogue then it’s time that they should be internationally monitored. The United Nation should come forward and make this as time bound issue like in other disputes such as the Middle East issue and in other problems that with the parties concerned, facilitations were given,” he added.

Criticizing the government for failing to implement the cross-LOC confidence building measures, he said: “”We supported the move. But it was sabotaged by India’s insincerity. If India was serious about trade across the LoC, it should have put in place the infrastructure. But that has not been the case.” (ANI)
