LONDON - Indian tycoons are soon to be given the opportunity to buy the world’s most expensive clothes after an Anglo-French retailer announced the launch of an 80,000 pounds suit.

Dormeuil is launching the suit - at the same marking another milestone in India’s extraordinary economic growth and reflecting the rise of a new class of super-rich.

In the last year alone, India has welcomed 69 new billionaires and witnessed a steep rise in the number of millionaires with its economy growing 8.9 per cent in the quarter ending September 30 alone. The rise has seen a surge in demand for luxury goods.

Now Dormeuil, which makes 80 per cent of its fabrics in Britain, will launch six suit fabrics, including the ‘Vanquish II’, hailed as the world’s most expensive suit. It is made of Vicuna, Qiviuk and Pashmina threads and woven into super-light wool.

“With a growing number of Indian entrepreneurs and business tycoons making it to the coveted Forbes rich list, there is no limit to their aspirations. This collection seeks to cater to these very desires,” the Telegraph quoted Frederic Dormeuil, Dormeuil’s marketing director, as saying.

“This collection seeks to cater to these very desires in the hunt for exclusivity and luxury. The launch could not have come at a better time,” he added.

One of the India’s renowned tailors, Aman Vadhera doesn’t doubt Indians would buy the cloth, but said it was so expensive he would demand insurance before allowing his tailors to cut and stitch it.

According to Vadhera, whose family tailors make suits for several Indian politicians, including Manmohan Singh, the prime minister, the most expensive piece of cloth he has ever been asked to cut is 3,000 pounds.

“I want to see what cloth could possibly be worth 5,500,000 Rupees (80,000 pounds). I have asked them to show me a piece. I don’t understand why it is so expensive. In India, pure cashmere is the most expensive cloth at 160,000 Rupees (around 2,300 pounds) for a suit length.

It’s made by an English company. My customers are very happy with Zegna cloth, which costs 50,000 Rupees (700 pounds). It’s very durable,” he said.

While Vadhera believes that country’s super rich wouldn’t hesitate in buying the cloth, he doubts weather his tailors would cope up the pressure of stitching such a hefty cloth.

“If I asked one of my tailors to stitch a 5,000,000 Rupees piece of cloth, his hands would tremble,” he said. (ANI)
