CAPE TOWN - Two suspects in the murder of Brit Indian bride Anni Dewani during her honeymoon in Cape Town earlier this month, who were led into a police station in handcuffs yesterday, have reportedly been positively identified by witnesses.
According to the Sun, 23-year-old Xolile Mngeni and 26-year-old Mzwamadoda Qwabe who have been charged with murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping would appear in court today. Taxi driver Tolo Tongo, 31, who is accused of the same crimes, would also be in the court.
All three were arrested after Anni’s was found dead in the back of cabbie Tongo’s abandoned VW Sharan. She was shot in the head.
Cape Town police are now reportedly hunting for a hotel worker they believe could have linked the couple to cabbie Tongo.
Yesterday Anni’s father had claimed that his daughter was crying and had refused to sit next to her husband on their honeymoon flight. He also alleged that his son-in-law and South African police had kept him in dark about the investigation process, adding that Dewani should go back to Cape Town to identify the culprits.
However Dewani’s British lawyer, Charlotte Harris, had denied there was any hostility between the couple, but did not refute the allegation that Anni had been crying.
The couple had reportedly arrived in the country earlier this month and spent four days on safari in the Kruger National Park. Later they moved to Cape Town and after spending a day lounging by their hotel pool, they decided to head out.
At Cape Town’s five-star Cape Grace Hotel where the couple had been staying, Dewani said: “We spent an a hour-and-a-half driving around the city. At around 9pm, we headed to Somerset West (a suburb 30 miles away),” when they were attacked. (ANI)
