41 NGOs barred from receiving foreign funds

NEW DELHI - The government has barred 41 NGOs from receiving foreign funds following charges of corruption against them, a home ministry official said Wednesday.
On the basis of the complaints received in the past and inquiries made, 41 associations are prohibited from receiving foreign contributions,” the official told IANS.
He said 35 associations have been told to take prior permission before receiving funds and bank accounts of 11 associations have been frozen.
Nine cases were referred to the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) for detailed investigation into FCRA (Foreign Contribution Regulation Act) violation,” the official said.
Of these nine cases, four were on trial. In one case, conviction had taken place. Two cases were stayed by the court while one was closed due to insufficient evidence. One case was still under scrutiny, the official said.
Indian NGOs and associations received foreign grants totalling Rs.10,802.67 crore (around $2,300 million) in the fiscal 2008-09, he said.
