LA-area bowling alley blaze sends up balls of fire

BELLFLOWER, Calif. — Firefighters say a blaze at a vacant California bowling alley in Bellflower sent up huge plumes of smoke, but no one was injured, and it appeared they would be able to save all the buildings around it.

Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Frederic Stowers says the fire was reported at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Bellflower. After determining there was no one in the 100- by 200-foot building, Stowers says firefighters turned their efforts toward protecting the surrounding neighborhood.

He says most of the roof caved in. It’s unclear what started the fire.
