MUMBAI - As many as 30 sportspersons Wednesday asked the youth of Maharashtra to maintain peace and harmony during Ganesh immersion and on the delivery of the Babri Masjid-Ramjanambhoomi verdict Friday.
Among the sportspersons were cricketers Ajit Wadekar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Sandeep Patil, Chandrakant Pandit, Vinod Kambli, Wasim Jafar, shooter Anjali Bhagwat, body builders Vikky Goraksha and Suhas Khamkar, kabaddi players Ashok Shinde and Rana Tiwari, and hockey players Dhanraj Pillai and Eliza Nelson.
The recent peaceful and simultaneous celebrations of Ganesh festival and Ramadan Id have symbolised the resolve of Indians to live in peace and maintain communal harmony, the sportspersons said in their appeal.
“They (sportspersons) also noted that many sportspersons from across the world will participate in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi and there is a potential security threat by separatist organisations,” a police official said.
“Any incident of terrorist attack will tarnish our country’s image on the international level,” the sportspersons said in the appeal.
