Blair, again controversial, to get Liberty Medal
PHILADELPHIA — Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is in Philadelphia to receive the Liberty Medal for his global human rights work, even as his new memoir reignites debate on his political leadership.
The medal is given annually by the National Constitution Center to individuals or organizations whose actions strive to bring liberty to people worldwide.
Blair is being honored Monday for his work with the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, which promotes religious tolerance, and for his initiative to improve governance in Africa.
Blair’s recent book tour has drawn hostile protesters in Britain and Ireland who blasted him for supporting the Iraq War.
Organizers of the medal ceremony say they don’t expect protesters. Former President Bill Clinton will present the award to Blair.
