Father of UK Prime Minister Cameron dies in France

LONDON — British Prime Minister David Cameron’s father died Wednesday after suffering a stroke in France, the leader’s office said.

Cameron’s office said the leader arrived at a hospital in Toulon shortly before his 77-year-old father died. Ian Cameron had suffered a stroke and heart complications while on vacation in France, the leader’s office said.

“It is with deep regret that we can confirm Ian Cameron died earlier this afternoon,” the prime minister’s spokesman Steve Field said.

Field said Cameron will remain in France overnight. French President Nicholas Sarkozy had provided a helicopter to transport Cameron from a French airport to the Font-Pre Hospital on the French Riviera.

Cameron, who returned to work Tuesday following the birth of a daughter, missed his first question session with lawmakers since Parliament resumed after a summer break.
