New Mexico National Guard deployed to border
SANTA FE, N.M. — New Mexico has deployed 82 National Guard troops to help secure the border with Mexico after they completed training.
President Barack Obama in May ordered 1,200 National Guard troops to boost security along the border.
Both California and Arizona announced deployments last week.
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson says violence along the border has been a major concern.
The National Guard troops assigned to the frontier have undergone training with U.S. Customs and Border Patrol and Department of Homeland Security as well as military training.
The governor’s office says they will provide criminal investigative analysis and entry identification teams.
