Informant heard coaxing suspect in NY temple plot

NEW YORK — A jury is hearing tapes of an FBI informant coaxing a Muslim man into making up his mind about attacking New York synagogues and military planes.

The secretly recorded tapes were played Tuesday at the Manhattan trial of James Cromitie and three others. They were arrested last year in a sting on charges they plotted to blow up two synagogues in the Bronx and shoot down planes a Newburgh, N.Y., base.

In a videotape, Cromitie and the informant are seen riding around in a sport utility vehicle to check out the base. The informant was posing as agent for a Pakistani terrorist group.

Cromitie disappeared for several weeks after that. When he resurfaced, the informant scolded him and demanded he pick some targets.
