Colorful Find: A rare, pink katydid

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — It’s the prettiest bug in town — bubblegum pink, vanishingly rare and was likely headed for an early demise in a bird’s beak.

That is until Kay Hrycko (her-RIHS’-koh) stumbled upon the shockingly pink katydid in the yard of her Springfield Township home Tuesday.

She says the colorful bug was “real obvious.”

Katydids are typically green to blend in with foliage. But occasionally one will have a mutation that renders it pink. While that may be pleasing to the eye, it makes them stand out like a daily special on a restaurant menu for birds.

Hrycko’s colorful katydid is safe from predators, living in a terrarium in her home.
