NEW DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- With people across the country celebrating the festival of Rakhi today, the state government in New Delhi came up with a rather unique way to mark the auspicious occasion. With the aim of making it easier for the women to reach their brother’s place without much hassle, all the women residents of the national capital were allowed to travel in state buses free of cost today. The announcement that the female residents of New Delhi would be permitted to ride state buses with the need to buy any tickets was made by the Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit on Monday.
While revealing the rather unique initiative taken by the government to celebrate the festival of Rakhi, Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit said that on the day of Raksha Bandhan, women in New Delhi would be able to make their journey without shelling out anything in the buses of the Delhi Transportation Corporation. The news of the free bus rides to the women in the national capital has also confirmed by the Delhi transport minister Arvinder Singh who had told the media that the offer would be valid from 8 in the morning to 5pm in the DTC buses although the AC buses have been excluded.
The announcement made the New Delhi Chief Minister came on the heels of a similar declaration by the Haryana government which was made earlier in the week offering free bus rides to the women on the auspicious day. The festival of Rakhi or Raksha bandhan is symbolic of the bond that is shared by sisters and brothers by tying a thread on the hands of the latter.
