Moscow, Aug 18 (IANS/RIA Novosti) A policeman in Russia turned a doctor when he helped a woman give birth at a checkpoint, a police spokeswoman said Wednesday.

A pregnant woman from the village of Kornilovka in Russia’s Far East was on her way to a hospital when labour pains began prematurely and she was not able to reach the destination on time. Her friend, who was driving the car, stopped at a police checkpoint where the policeman, himself a father of two, immediately began helping the pregnant woman.

“When the girl was born, she wasn’t breathing. At the same time other inspectors had stopped another vehicle because the driver wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. Fortunately, it turned out the violator was a doctor,” the spokeswoman said.

The doctor rendered first aid to the newborn after which she began breathing. Both the mother and child are now in satisfactory condition at a hospital.
