Search on after 4 found dead in S. Africa mine

SPRINGS, South Africa — South African police are searching underground for more bodies after a Johannesburg newspaper reported that guards shot and killed illegal miners at an abandoned shaft owned by relatives of Nelson Mandela and President Jacob Zuma.

Police spokeswoman Col. Noxolo Kweza said Friday that four bodies were recovered a day earlier. She says police don’t know if more bodies will be found.

Kweza says police are investigating reports in The Sowetan newspaper that the four were shot dead Monday by mine guards.

The mine east of Johannesburg is owned by Zuma’s nephew Khulubuse Zuma and Mandela’s grandson Zondwa Mandela. Their company is embroiled in a pay dispute with mineworkers they inherited from several mines they bought from an insolvent company.
