Alaska Guard tries again to rescue 9 from glacier
ANCHORAGE, Alaska — The National Guard is trying again to rescue nine people stranded on an Alaskan glacier.
Guard spokesman Maj. Guy Hayes says an HH-60 Pave Hawk helicopter is headed to Knik Glacier, about 40 miles northeast of Anchorage on Wednesday.
The group includes seven guardsmen who were part of a rescue effort that began Sunday when a small sightseeing plane went down the glacier.
The crash initially stranded five people from the plane, three of whom were rescued Tuesday. A man from Galveston, Texas, and the plane’s pilot, of Palmer, Alaska, remain on the glacier.
The stranded Guard members include three who skied to the site Monday and four whose helicopter slid and rolled on the glacier Tuesday. They were not injured.
