Students commemorate Hiroshima Day, pledge for peace

MUMBAI - Carrying a replica of an atom bomb with a slogan ‘No Bomb - Save Earth’, more than 3,000 students Friday led the peace march to commemorate the Hiroshima Day here and pledged to work towards peace and a nuclear-free world.
Organised by an NGO, the Bombay Sarvodaya Mandal and the National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Mumbai university, the anti-nuclear Peace March created awareness among students about the holocaust.
Students from various colleges held banners depicting slogans like ‘No More Hiroshima’ and ‘We want to grow up, not blow up’.
About 3,050 students as against the anticipated 2,000 took the pledge. Ramesh Deokar, NSS Programme Officer, University of Mumbai, administered the pledge.
Students from 80 colleges along with social activists, Gandhian workers, peace activists, advocates, journalists and NGO members marched from the Azad Maidan to Hutatma Chowk in south Mumbai to support the cause.
This year will be the 65th anniversary of the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, two Japanese cities. The bombings took place in 1945 during the final states of World War II.
Apart from killing more than 1.5 lakh people, the bombings left thousands crippled claiming more than three lakh lives over the years.
