Mandela meets renowned author in South Africa
JOHANNESBURG — The Nelson Mandela Foundation says renowned Chilean-American author Ariel Dorfman has met with the South African icon and former president at the foundation’s offices.
Dorfman, formerly the cultural adviser to the late Chilean leader Salvador Allende, has spoken in four cities during his ten-day tour of South Africa. He fled his motherland after Allende was overthrown in a bloody coup by dictator Augusto Pinochet.
Mandela, 92, who is increasingly frail, made a brief public appearance during the FIFA World Cup soccer tournament that ended July 11.
Dorfman said Wednesday it was a great honor to meet Mandela, whom he said was well and smiling.
The author is scheduled to give the annual Nelson Mandela lecture on Saturday.
