US gave Afghan, Pakistan leaders heads-up on leak
WASHINGTON — The State Department says it alerted the leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan over the weekend that a trove of leaked classified documents was expected to be made public.
Department spokesman P.J. Crowley said it’s too early to know what diplomatic impact the leak will have on the Afghan war effort, or on U.S. relations with Pakistan.
He said Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari were notified in advance of the expected publication of the leaked documents on the Internet.
Crowley said it remains unclear who leaked the classified documents to WikiLeaks. He joined the White House and the Pentagon in condemning the disclosures.
