US home movie spending keeps falling in 1st half

LOS ANGELES — U.S. spending on home entertainment continued to fall in the first half of the year as gains for Blu-ray discs and digital downloads again failed to make up for the big drop in DVD sales.

That’s according to an industry group of the major Hollywood studios, the Digital Entertainment Group.

The group said overall sales fell 3.3 percent from a year ago to $8.8 billion.

Purchases of packaged media like Blu-ray discs and DVDs fell 7.1 percent to $4.7 billion. DVD sales fell about 15 percent to nearly $4 billion, while Blu-ray sales rose 84 percent to $733 million.

Rental spending fell 4.9 percent in the first half to just under $3 billion.

Meanwhile, sales of downloads and video on demand rose 23 percent to $1.1 billion.
