Mass grave of communist soldiers found in Vietnam

HANOI, Vietnam — An official says a mass grave has been found containing the remains of 40 communist soldiers killed during the Vietnam War.

Lt. Col. Do Van Dai in central Dak Nong province says it took excavators nearly four weeks to recover the remains, which were reburied at the provincial military cemetery Monday.

Dai said Tuesday that the soldiers were believed killed during an attack on a base of the U.S.-backed South Vietnamese army in December 1965. Dai says two former South Vietnamese soldiers informed authorities of the grave, where excavators are still searching for more remains.

An estimated 3 million Vietnamese and 58,000 Americans were killed in the war, which ended in 1975 when communist North Vietnamese forces overran the capital of South Vietnam.
