Ala. founder of Saxon candy stores dies at 102

WELLINGTON, Ala. — Cora Saxon, who founded the string of Saxon Candy Kitchens that thrived in four Southern states in the 1950s and 1960s, has died at 102.

The Gray Brown Service funeral home confirmed Wednesday that Saxon died Monday afternoon. Family members told The Anniston Star that she died from internal bleeding after a fall Saturday night.

Saxon and her husband, Henry Saxon, opened the first Saxon Candy Kitchen in 1947. They baked the candy in their kitchen and sold it in a small store between Anniston and Gadsden. Other Saxon Candy Kitchens, known for pecan pralines and chocolates, opened over the next two decades in Alabama, Georgia, Florida and Tennessee.

She began selling the stores after her husband died in an automobile accident in 1968.
