Gates: ‘Reasonable chance’ for UN’s Iran penalties

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Robert Gates says there’s still time to stop Iran from gaining a nuclear weapon.

He gives new U.N. penalties a “reasonable chance” of persuading Iran’s clerical leadership to end what the U.S. claims is its drive to build a bomb. Iran denies it is seeking a weapon.

Gates tells “Fox News Sunday” that no one is ready to concede that a nuclear Iran is inevitable.

By U.S. estimates, Iran is one to three years away from being able to build a crude weapon. It would take longer to perfect ways of delivering it.
