Archeologists use radar to find ancient Egypt town
CAIRO — Egypt’s antiquities department says an Austrian team has used radar imaging to find the outlines of the 3,500 year old capital of Egypt’s foreign occupiers.
The radar imaging shows the outlines of streets, houses and temples underneath the green farm fields and modern towns in Egypt’s Delta.
Archaeology chief Zahi Hawass said in a statement Sunday that the area could be part of Avaris, the summer capital of the Hyksos, invaders from Asia that ruled Egypt from 1664-1569 B.C., during the 15th Dynasty.
He added that such noninvasive techniques are the best way define the extent of the site. Aerial photographs show many modern towns in the area.
