Fla. air base to release more on armed couple

TAMPA, Fla. — More details are expected shortly about two heavily armed people detained as they tried to enter an Air Force base in Florida that houses the U.S. command center for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Officials at MacDill Air Force Base planned a news conference Tuesday on the case.

The MacDill public affairs office says a man and woman tried to gain unauthorized access to the base Monday evening. Neither was able to show proper identification and their vehicle was inspected.

Military-style gear and weapons were found inside the sport utility vehicle.

Authorities say no explosives were found.

Officials have declined to release any further information on the individuals involved or a possible motive.

The base is home to U.S. Central Command, which runs the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.
