US says 3 Americans in Yemen face terror charges

WASHINGTON — The State Department says three of the 12 Americans being held in Yemen have been detained on terrorism-related charges.

Department spokesman P.J. Crowley declined Tuesday to provide additional details on the three or the charges against them. He said the arrests had been made over the past several months but not in recent days.

On Monday, Crowley announced that 12 U.S. citizens were in Yemeni custody and suggested that the cases may be terror-related. He said Tuesday that he had contacted the U.S. Embassy in Yemen, which made it clear that only three of those in custody face terror-related charges.
