Schieffer to replace Thomas as graduation speaker

BETHESDA, Md. — Bob Schieffer of CBS News will replace veteran White House correspondent Helen Thomas as graduation speaker at a Maryland high school.

Thomas was replaced after making inflammatory comments about Israel.

Schieffer, moderator for “Face the Nation,” will speak at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda on June 14.

The 89-year-old Thomas retired Monday from a columnist position with Hearst Newspapers.

Her retirement followed condemnation of her remarks that Israel should “get the hell out of Palestine.” She has since said she regretted her comments.
