‘Shrek’ wins quiet weekend with $25.5 million

LOS ANGELES — “Shrek Forever After” is lingering at the top of the box office, taking in $25.5 million to hang on to the No. 1 spot for a third-straight weekend.

The animated hit easily fended off a rush of fresh films as audiences continued to show slim interest in new releases. The best of the newcomers, the rock ‘n’ roll comedy “Get Him to the Greek,” debuted at No. 2 with $17.6 million.

The top 20 movies at U.S. and Canadian theaters Friday through Sunday, followed by distribution studio, gross, number of theater locations, average receipts per location, total gross and number of weeks in release, as compiled Monday by Hollywood.com are:
