Hawking arrives in Canada for research post
WATERLOO, Ontario — British physicist Stephen Hawking has arrived in Canada for a six-week research visit to the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo, Ontario.
The institute said Saturday that it will hold an official welcoming ceremony for Hawking on June 20.
Hawking accepted a research post with the institute in 2008. The institute announced last October that it would establish the Stephen Hawking Center at Perimeter Institute in his honor.
Hawking is best known for his work explaining the physics of black holes. In the 1960s, he developed a degenerative disease that has impaired his ability to move and speak.
The Perimeter Institute is a research center founded in 1999 by BlackBerry-maker Research In Motion co-CEO Mike Lazaridis.
