SIR PAUL McCARTNEY serenaded America’s First Lady MICHELLE OBAMA with an apt BEATLES favourite on Wednesday (02Jun10) as he was honoured at the White House.

President Barack Obama presented the star with the third Gershwin Prize for Popular Song from the Library of Congress at a special ceremony in Washington, D.C., which was followed by a performance by the star.

And McCartney couldn’t resist dedicating the ballad Michelle to the President’s wife, admitting he had been “itching to do (the song) at the White House”.

He added, “I hope the President will forgive me.”

The rocker also used the opportunity to express his support for the U.S. leader, who is facing increased pressure to find a solution to the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

McCartney told Obama, “Even though, we all know you have got lots of difficult issues to deal with - I just want you to know you have billions of us who are rooting for you and we know you are going to come through.”

Prior to his big night at the White House, environmental activist McCartney expressed his dismay about the Gulf of Mexico oil disaster, stating, “The fact that something like that could happen and the people who are to blame don’t have the ability to instantly cap it and clean it up, it’s something that’s got to be addressed.”
