Man held in Times Square probe denies suspect link

BOSTON — Pakistan’s consul general in Boston says one of three men arrested in the investigation of a failed car-bombing in Times Square denies any connection to suspect Faisal Shahzad (FY’-sul shah-ZAHD’).

Consul General Barry Hoffman says Aftab Khan told him during a visit to his jail cell Monday he doesn’t know Shahzad and had no contact with him.

Hoffman says Khan is a “scared young man” who doesn’t understand why he was arrested last week.

Khan, his roommate and a man arrested in Portland, Maine, are being held on immigration charges.

Authorities say they funneled money to Shahzad but may not have known how the money would be used.

Shahzad was captured on a plane bound for Dubai days after the bomb attempt. A cousin of Shahzad’s father has called his detention “a conspiracy.”
