Calif middle school students sick by stolen pills

PORTERVILLE, Calif. — Police say a California middle school student stole prescription sleeping pills from her grandmother and gave them to some classmates, sending them to the hospital.

Officers were called to Sequoia Middle School in Porterville on Monday afternoon after the 13-year-old girl and three other students became ill after each taking three pills.

Sgt. Jake Castellow says the students appeared intoxicated and at least one vomited. School staff took the students to a hospital, where they were evaluated and released.

Castellow says police arrested the girl who brought the pills to school on a possible felony charge of selling or possessing a controlled substance. She was later released to a guardian.
