Women head 6.1 mn families in Mexico

Mexico City, May 17 (IANS/EFE) Some 6.1 million Mexican families are headed by women, accounting for 22 percent of the 28.1 million households registered this year, new statistics revealed.

The number of households in Mexico grew nearly 20 percent since 2000, when 23.4 million households were registered in the country, according to the data released by the National Population Council (Conapo).

Some 2.5 million households, or 8.8 percent of the total, are single-person families, Conapo said.

On an average, a Mexican family has 4.4 members, with nuclear families having 4.08 members and extended families having 5.4 people.
