Spanish woman is 2nd to climb 14 highest peaks
MADRID — Spanish climber Edurne Pasaban is the second woman to scale the world’s 14 highest peaks.
Pasaban’s website says she reached the peak of 8,027-meter (26,335.30 feet) Mount Shisha Pangma in Tibet at 11:30 a.m. local time Monday.
South Korea’s Oh Eun-sun beat Pasaban to become the first woman to conquer the world’s 14 peaks over 8,000 meters (26,247 feet) when she scaled Mount Annapurna in Nepal last month.
Pasaban has questioned Oh’s claim to have reached the summit of Kanchenjunga, the world’s third highest peak, in 2009. Oh says she has proof.
Pasaban topped Shisha Pangma, the smallest of the 14 peaks, a month after climbing Annapurna. She began the 14 peaks with Everest in 2001.
The 36-year-old Basque was accompanied by a three-man Spanish team.
