Kyrgyz governor says new authorities in control
JALAL-ABAD, Kyrgyzstan — The regional governor of a province in southern Kyrgyzstan says there will be no repetition of riots that killed one person and wounded more than 60 in the Central Asian nation.
Jalal-Abad Gov. Bektur Asanov says that supporters of the interim government are firmly in control of the city that has been shaken by violence over the past two days.
Asanov told The Associated Press Saturday that the authorities have created a militia in order to prevent further riots by supporters of former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev.
Several hundred Bakiyev supporters, some with automatic rifles, holed up in the regional government building after capturing it Thursday. Backers of the interim government drove them out Friday after exchanging gunshots and hurling stones in the worst violence since last month’s ouster of Bakiyev.
