In NYC, Blair touts cell phones for Kenyan women

NEW YORK — The wife of former British Prime Minister Tony Blair wants to put cell phones in the hands of women in the developing world.

Cherie (shuh-REE’) Blair said Thursday in New York City mobile phones are a vital educational, health and economic tool. She was attending a meeting of former President Bill Clinton’s Clinton Global Initiative.

Blair says a pilot project will give cell phones to 4,000 women entrepreneurs in Kenya. She calls on the business leaders attending the meeting to help support the initiative.

Clinton started the Clinton Global Initiative to bring together the public and private sectors. Those attending discuss solutions in climate change, poverty, global health and education.

Conference attendees are expected to commit to steps they’ll take to work on global problems.
