E Street’s Clemons: Pain will make me stronger

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. — The Big Man is back.

Last year, E Street Band saxophonist Clarence Clemons arose from a wheelchair to perform at the Super Bowl with Bruce Springsteen after a double knee replacement.

Now he’s taking to the stage again after a new struggle to recover from major spinal surgery.

Clemons performed Saturday night at a Hollywood, Fla., benefit for Home Safe, a children’s charity.

Clemons had surgery Jan. 13 and is still alternating between a wheelchair and a crutch.

But he told The Associated Press in a recent interview he’s winning his battles — including severe, chronic pain and post-surgical depression.

Clemons says if there’s an E Street tour in 2011, he’ll be ready.
