US military deaths in Iraq war at 4,393

As of Tuesday, April 27, 2010, at least 4,393 members of the U.S. military had died in the Iraq war since it began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press count.

The figure includes nine military civilians killed in action. At least 3,482 military personnel died as a result of hostile action, according to the military’s numbers.

The AP count is four fewer than the Defense Department’s tally, last updated Tuesday at 10 a.m. EDT.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Iraq, 31,790 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department’s weekly tally.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

— Staff Sgt. Christopher D. Worrell, 35, of Virginia Beach, Va.; died April 22 in Baghdad of injuries suffered in a noncombat-related incident; assigned to the 702nd Combat Support Battalion, 4th Stryker Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

— Staff Sgt. James R. Patton, 23, of Fort Benning, Ga.; died April 18 in Tikrit, Iraq, of injuries from a helicopter crash; assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga.

— Pfc. Charlie C. Antonio, 28, of Kahului, Hawaii; died April 18 in Iraq of injuries suffered in a noncombat-related incident; assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.
