Grandparents hope to see boy ditched at NY church
NEW YORK — The grandparents of a toddler ditched at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York have traveled from Florida in the hope of seeing him, but authorities are not sure when that will happen.
Donald and Frieda Fons of Land O’ Lakes, outside Tampa, bought open-ended tickets because it’s not clear when they’ll be able to see their grandson, Nathaniel.
The boy is in a foster home while child services officials sort out who should have custody. He was found alone at the cathedral Tuesday evening with a note in his hand bearing the name of a detective in Florida.
Authorities in Florida and New York say he was left there by a couple who had been traveling with the boy after his mother was arrested on counterfeiting charges. It’s believed they fled New York City and headed north.
