2 Americans jailed in Iraq reported in poor health

MINNEAPOLIS — The mothers of three Americans jailed for nearly nine months by the Iranian government say Swiss diplomats who visited them report two of the three are in poor health.

Their mothers tell The Associated Press that Shane Bauer, Sarah Shourd and Josh Fattal were allowed to speak with Swiss diplomats Thursday at Evin Prison in Tehran.

The diplomats learned that Shourd is suffering from a gynecological condition and battling depression, while Bauer has a stomach ailment. Their mothers weren’t given details.

The three also are considering a hunger strike.

The friends were detained July 31, after apparently straying into Iran while hiking in Iraq. Iranian officials have accused them of links to U.S. intelligence, which their families say is absurd.
