5 headless bodies found in rebel-held Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Residents in Mogadishu say five headless bodies have been found in a rebel-controlled area.

A resident says some of the dead men had been threatened by Islamist militants because they had helped build Somalia’s parliament building.

He says residents believe militants with the dominant insurgent group al-Shabab carried out the killings.

No group has claimed responsibility for the killings.

But al-Shabab in the past has beheaded individuals it accused of spying for the U.S.- and U.N.-backed Somali government.

Islamic insurgents control much of Mogadishu and have been trying to topple the fragile government for three years.

Somalia has not had an effective government for 18 years.
