Pakistan prosecutor: Americans linked to militants

ISLAMABAD — A Pakistani government prosecutor says he has presented evidence in court that shows contacts between five detained Americans with an al-Qaida linked militant leader.

Nadeem Akram says the evidence produced Saturday includes documents, phone call logs and retrieved e-mails. He says it shows the men had contacts with Qari Saifullah Akhtar.

Akhtar was the leader of the banned militant network Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami, which is believed to have extensive contacts with al-Qaida and the Taliban.

The five northern Virginia men are accused of planning terrorist acts in Pakistan. Court proceedings are closed to the press.
