ROHTANG PASS - The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has opened the Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh after five months.

The Pass was closed due to heavy snowfall and it was declared open for light vehicles on Thursday, almost a month before the date scheduled date.

The personnel of 38 Task Force of BRO used heavy machinery to clear the road of snow and other impediments, a mission that they commenced in the first week of March.

“Our work started on March 2 and a total of 12 machines were used. Around 50 security personnel, five officers and 150 personnel from the workforce were involved in the clearing process. Till now the road has opened till Zingzingbar town. Sarchu is still far off but we hope in the next 15-20 days we will open the road till Sarchu,” said Brigadier S K Doon, Commander of 38 Task Force of BRO.

The opening of the Rohtang Pass not only connects Leh with the rest of the country but also provides much needed relief for people in the tribal belt of Lahual-Spiti in Himachal Pradesh who too remain cut off since mid-November. (ANI)
